Artist and photographer Kalle Sanner’s decade long project about architect Sven Brolid’s twin chapels in Gothenburg’s Western Cemetery was published in the book ‘Lukas/Markus‘ (ll’Editions & Blackbook Publications), in 2019.
Photographer and artist Kalle Sanner (b. 1978) lives and works in Gothenburg, Sweden. In addition to self-initiated projects, Sanner works on commissions for cultural institutions, design studios and architectural firms. Focusing mainly on still life, architecture and exhibition photography; he was previously responsible for the applied photography programme at Yrgo in Gothenburg. Since 2010 he is part of Ord och Bilds editorial committee as well as the photo author section at the Swedish Association of Professional Photographers, whose main task is to highlight Swedish photobook production.
In 2006 he started the publishing company and distribution network Blackbook Publication in collaboration with Simon Berg; in this context he has published several titles and exhibited the project ‘Album’ at the Hasselblad Centre.
Sanner also works as a teacher at the Valand Academy and is responsible for the courses Artist Book, Professional Development and Publication in the expanded field. Sanner works in a photographic practice and his main concerns focus on spatiality and perception, he is also committed to the production and distribution of the artistic photobook. He is currently Head of the Photographic Department at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg.
Kalle Sanner is also part of the photographic duo Ander Sanner, together with Carl Ander. The duo works together on commissions, mainly for clients within the worlds of art, design and architecture. When they are not traveling for assignments, they operate out of their Gothenburg based studio, located in the neighbourhood of Majorna.
“The international photographic environment in which Kalle Sanner and Carl Ander operate places great demands on mastering different techniques and following a rapidly changing development, but also on a deeper knowledge of the meanings of photographic images in different contexts. The understanding of and movements between genres is a central aspect of the contemporary photographer’s competence. Sanners and Anders’ pictures have been executed and published in a number of different contexts, and if you look at how their projects work, the strength of the aesthetic attitude and the photographic methods becomes clear. What is particularly striking is how the image becomes extremely visible – and in a fascinating way, this highlighted attention also generates a sense of reality.”
