Daniel Götesson, primarily known as EKTA (born 1978), is lives and works in Gothenburg. He moves freely between different forms of art with roots in graffiti culture. Götesson has studied animation and graphic design, holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Illustration from the London College of Communication, England. Daniel Götesson has had several solo exhibitions in Sweden and internationally in Lyon, Berlin, and Brussels. He is represented with public works in Sweden as well as in Italy, France, Croatia, Poland, and England.
EKTA works across numerous mediums, encompassing drawing, collage, painting, sculpture, textile, large wall works, animation, performance, installation, and music. His practice is characterized by a willingness to take bold risks, both in its literal sense as well as artistically. In the context of where he makes his work and in his ongoing investigation into new materials and visual language. When discussing his work, EKTA emphasizes the importance of failure as a way of moving forward, and challenging established structures. This subversive nature of his work, comes through both in his process and use of materials as well as in his imagery, ranging from pure abstraction to combining formal elements with figurative elements, often appropriating patterns, symbols, iconography and figures in outlines or as colored silhouettes.
In 2013, he received the one year working grant from Konstnärsnämnden and in 2016 he received the BYGGNADS Kulturstipendium. He is represented by Galleri Thomassen in Gothenburg and Mini Galerie in Amsterdam.
“In Daniel Götesson’s paintings, influences from graffiti culture and modernist undertones coexist, where the abstract meets recognizable symbolism. There is notably an ongoing dialogue between Götesson and other artists and their works; in this series, he addresses previous artist colleagues such as Roger Risberg, Börje Evert Hjort, and Martin Kippenberger. Götesson’s painting is characterized by strong contrasts with geometric fields and various textures that playfully interact. However, the thematic scope of the images also encompasses references that reveal social, political dimensions, and existential life questions.”
