Lydia Sandgren (b. 1987) is a Swedish author who gained recognition for winning the August Prize in 2020.
Sandgren grew up in Hyssna in Marks Municipality as the eldest of seven siblings. She is a trained psychologist and works at an outpatient psychiatric clinic in Gothenburg. She has also studied philosophy and literature at the university.
She debuted in 2020 with the novel Samlade Verk (Collected Works), which many critics praised as a celebration of the power of literature and education. The book won the August Prize with the jury’s motivation:
“Lydia Sandgren constructs and populates her own literary universe, brimming with vivid details. Gothenburg, with its underground clubs, dive bars, and university library, becomes the setting for a love triangle, where the missing Cecilia is the black hole around which the characters revolve. Collected Works is a love letter to literature.”
Along with architectural critic Mark Isitt, Lydia Sandgren was interviewed by Karl Palmås for Vår Tids Konst.
