Thomas Millroth(Malmö/Borrby)
Author and Critic
Thomas Millroth (b. 1947) is a distinguished Swedish art historian, critic, author, and curator. He earned his PhD in art history in 1975 and has since published around forty books, primarily on art, music, and literature.
Millroth has held various roles as a lecturer, music reviewer, and art critic, contributing for many years to publications such as Sydsvenskan, Aftonbladet, Expressen and Paletten. Between 1995 and 2008, he served as director of the Ystad Art Museum, where he curated numerous exhibitions and acquired significant collections of artists’ books.
One of his most notable works is Artist’s Books from a Swedish Point of View (2021). This bilingual, approximately 600-page book—richly illustrated with over 650 images—is regarded as a pioneering and comprehensive overview of artists’ books in Sweden. Millroth has been described as “one of the Nordics’ largest collectors of artists’ books.” The book includes international perspectives, particularly from Denmark and the former GDR. In 2025, the follow-up; Appendix 1: Artists’ Books from a Swedish Point of View With Special Attention Paid to the Contributions of Denmark and Finland, was published.
In addition, he has written critical studies on artists such as Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, Bertil Almlöf, and Olivier Herdies, and is praised for his ability to blend art critique with personal and engaging narrative. Thomas Millroth wrote the essay for the supplement of LL’Editions facsimile edition of Nils Olof Bonnier’s Struktur (1968/2025). Millroth’s interest in Nils Olof Bonnier’s artistic practice goes back a long way. Over the years, he has persistently gathered information and material related to Bonnier, as well as to the artist’s tragic disappearance.
